Prostate Cancer & Early Stage Detection
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in the United States. Early stage detection offers many options for treatment and cure. A prostate exam can be the difference between life and death. Our screening is quick – only 5-10 minutes – and your results will be sent to you in 7-10 days. Is the Prostate Screening Exam Right for You?
Some of the criteria for getting screened are obvious, such as if you’ve had a history of prostate cancer in your family. Other factors for early detection may include the fact that the risk of prostate cancer is 70% higher in African American men than white men. Advanced Urology Associates recommends a prostate cancer screening if the below criteria is present and a PSA/DRE have not been performed within the past year:
- Age 40: Consider baseline PSA
- Age 45: Annual screening if African American or have a father or brother who had prostate cancer before the age of 65
- Age 50: Annual Screening
*Screening in men with less than a 10 year life expectancy, either due to age or other illness or disease, is discouraged.
