A vasectomy is a safe, reliable procedure that many men choose after considering a variety of birth control options. “The vasectomy is one of the most successful birth control modalities,” explained Dr. Greg Andros, Urologist with Advanced Urology Associates. “There’s very low risk to the patient, and the procedure allows women to avoid more invasive procedures and the risk that comes with taking birth control pills.”

Dr. Andros has extended office hours on Fridays to allow patients more recovery time over the weekends. Patients can come in between 7:30 am – 6:00 pm for the procedure. “Friday is a preferred day for many of my patients, especially for a vasectomy,” said Dr. Andros. “Many are able to make a late afternoon appointment without missing work or affecting their daily schedules. I also offer same-day vasectomies, where the patient is able to have the vasectomy during the initial visit, which allows him to miss even less work.”
Dr. Andros utilizes the latest no-scalpel vasectomy technique, which includes a topical numbing gel that avoids the need for an initial needle stick. “This allows for less pain, faster recovery, and exceptional success rates of over 99.5%,” he explained. “I provide patients with a pain pill prescription, but the majority of patients don’t need them. The procedure takes an average of 15 minutes. I also offer patients a twilight anesthetic if they’re feeling anxious about the procedure, but most don’t need this either.”

After performing a vasectomy, Dr. Andros advises his patients to rest for the next couple of days; the weekends are great for this. “In addition to rest, placing a bag of frozen peas on the sore area will help with mild pain, and I advise patients to not lift anything weighing over 20 pounds for the next three days,” he said.
