Advanced Urology Associates Invited to Participate in National Clinical Trial
It’s a great honor to be invited to participate in a national clinical trial. Advanced Urology Associates in Joliet will be one of 45 offices across the U.S. to participate in Dendreon’s clinical trial involving patients with early stage prostate cancer.
“We’re so excited to participate in this new trial,” said Tasha Horsley, Certified Nurse Practitioner and Research Coordinator with AUA. “It took six months to prepare our office, and we’re one of the first ten offices in the nation to be activated for the trial. We just enrolled our first patient!”
Advanced Urology is looking for at least nine more men to participate in the trial. Patients must have been diagnosed with prostate cancer within the past twelve months, and must be on “active surveillance”, meaning they’re not being actively treated for the disease, but are being watched closely. “Patients enrolled in the trial will be chosen at random by the study; one of every three will continue on active surveillance, and the other two will undergo immunotherapy treatment with Provenge,” explained Horsley. “We’re trying to discover the efficacy of Sipuleucel-T in reducing the reclassification of the prostate cancer to a higher grade of cancer in men on active surveillance. Sipuleucel-T is already used to treat metastatic prostate cancer.”
The treatment with Sipuleucel-T begins with some T-cells, the fighter cells in the immune system, being removed from one’s body by a process called leukapheresis, and infused with a special protein; the cells are then returned into the patient’s blood intravenously. “This technique allows the patient’s own immune system to be activated to work harder to ‘eat up’ the existing cancer cells,” said Horsley. “We’re so proud to be part of this trial that could possibly make huge strides in the oncology world. This amazing experience will also help us get involved in additional trials, allowing us to offer more to our community.”
