No-Scalpel Vasectomies: The Perfect Way To Get The Perfect Family Size
Once people reach their thirties or forties, they’ve usually decided whether or not to have more children. The options available for reliable birth control tend to fall to women, many of whom use oral contraceptives or undergo a tubal ligation. Not all women, however, are able to take medications that affect their hormones, and a tubal ligation is very invasive and requires a lot of down time, which is hard to manage with a busy family.
A better option is a procedure that the men undergo, called a no-scalpel vasectomy. “Compared to a regular vasectomy, the no-scalpel technique is much faster,” said Dr. Ryan Manecke, Urologist with Advanced Urology Associates. “The no-scalpel vasectomy involves only a single small puncture versus two incisions, potentially reducing the risk of infection and speeding up the recovery time. The procedure itself only takes 15-30 minutes.”
According to Dr. Manecke, approximately 10% of men in the U.S. have undergone a vasectomy. “In our practice, the average age when men seek a vasectomy is age 40, and they usually have two or three children,” he explained. “They consider their families to be complete, and they want a very reliable birth control method.”
A vasectomy is a simple, safe procedure that makes a man unable to father children. “The procedure is usually easy for a Urologist,” said Dr. Manecke. “Optimal results are reported for physicians who perform 50 or more vasectomies per year.”
Vasectomies don’t affect sexual function, and are reversible. “Reversing a vasectomy involves re-attaching the tubes using micro surgical techniques,” said Dr. Manecke. “Although the tubes can be reattached, fertility isn’t always regained, especially if many years have elapsed since the vasectomy was performed.” It’s a personal decision that should be made by both parents.
