One reason some men avoid a vasectomy is because they’re afraid of the procedure itself. Having someone use a scalpel on delicate areas of the body can be a little scary. But what if you could have the same end result without the use of a scalpel?
No-scalpel vasectomies have been performed in the United States since 1988, and many consider the procedure to be one of the most effective forms of birth control. The difference between a no-scalpel and a conventional vasectomy lies in how the doctor accesses the vans deferens tubes, which need to be severed to block sperm transport. The traditional method involves two incisions that are later stitched closed. The no-scalpel method involves additional numbing procedures and one small opening (created without a scalpel) to access the tubes, which are sealed shut by being cauterized and tied off. This gentle technique doesn’t require stitches, and bleeding is minimal. The 20-30 minute procedure is performed in the doctor’s private office.
There are many benefits of a no-scalpel vasectomy over the conventional method. The procedure and recovery time are both faster, with fewer complications and less discomfort. The procedure is in-office, and doesn’t require a hospital visit. A no-scalpel vasectomy is equally effective as the conventional method, and best of all, no scalpel is needed.
